Peach County, GA — An accident in the parking lot of a Peach County school killed a mother and injured her daughter Wednesday morning, August 3, 2011. The automobile accident occurred at Kay Elementary School at 8:05 a.m., reported Macon.com.

Gloria Hernandez and her daughter, Jacqueline Hernandez, both of Fort Valley, were critically injured when the 2006 Chrysler Sebring they were riding in backed up, causing an opened car door to knock both of the victims down.

Gloria reportedly hit her head in the parking lot in front of the school, causing her to sustain life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to The Medical Center of Central Georgia where doctors pronounced her dead at 5 p.m.

Jacqueline Hernandez was also transported via ambulance to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Georgia State Police stated that while there are conflicting reports, the incident appears to be accidental.

Jose Luis Ramirez, 29, told investigating officers that he was in the passenger seat of the vehicle, when Gloria got out of the driver’s seat without putting the car in park. Ramirez said that he got into the driver’s seat and accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, while instructing his son to sit down.

But, a witness told officers a conflicting story. They recounted that Ramirez was driving, had parked in the wrong direction and had suddenly backed up as another vehicle was approaching to avoid being hit.

Investigations are underway.
