Wheeling, WV — A mining accident at Tunnel Ridge injured six miners, and was dubbed the “most severe mine accident” the West Liverty’s Volunteer Fire Chief has handled since the mine has opened. The mining accident occurred on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at around 7 p.m., in a mine owned by Alliance Coal, reported the State Journal.
According to police officials, the miners were coming out of the mine following the end of their shift when the cart derailed and hit a wall, as it was coming down a hill and made a turn.
One miner sustained a fractured ankle, while the other sustained head injuries and bumps and bruises. They were rushed to Ohio Valley Medical Center for medical treatment.
Alliance Coal said they will be conducting an inspection to help determine why the cart derailed.
Investigations are underway.
