Waterloo, NY — A fiery wreck in central New York hospitalized 46 people and killed the driver of a tractor-trailer, when it crashed into a tour bus on Interstate 90. The fatal bus crash occurred early Friday, July 22, 2011, at about 1:30 a.m., on I-90 along the northern edge of the Finger Lakes region, reported Reuters.

According to New York State Police, a tour bus carrying 50 people from the Canadian province of Ontario was heading to New York City when it pulled over on the side of the highway in Junius, New York for unknown reasons. As the bus was pulling back onto the highway, it was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer.

The collision sparked a fire that engulfed both the bus and the big rig in flames.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Timothy Hume of Dreyden, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical crews.

Emergency teams rushed 46 people on the bus to area hospitals, where 30 of the victims were treated for unknown injuries.

Investigations into the fatal bus crash are underway. A crash reconstruction team is reportedly at the scene and is investigating how the crash occurred.

This fatal bus crash took place just days after another tour bus crash killed two people and injured 35 others in Avoca, NY. The string of tour bus crashes across the United States has many lawmakers pushing for stricter bus regulations to help keep further fatal tour bus crashes from occurring.
