Cambridge, MA — An intoxicated teenager fell nearly 20 feet from an escalator at the Alewife MBTA station on Sunday night, June 26, 2011, reported WHDH.com.
According to MTBA surveillance video, Shane O’Malley, 18, was trying to ride the railing of the “T” escalator to an upper level, but kept sliding down the railing. Once he was near the top, O’Malley tried again but fell off the side of the escalator and 20 feet to the ground below.
O’Malley later admitted to drinking alcohol with four or five friends before the accident occurred. He reportedly didn’t even know what happened until his father told him in the hospital after he woke up.
After plummeting to the ground O’Malley lay motionless on the ground as MBTA employees and witnesses rushed to his aide.
O’Malley only sustained a fractured elbow in the fall.
“I was…way too intoxicated. That’s what made me make that mistake. I was being an idiot. I was being very irresponsible,” said O’Malley to news sources.
MTBA is not pressing charges against the teen.
