West Carroll Parish, LA — A church van veered off Louisiana Highway 587 and slammed into a culvert, killing four people and hospitalizing seven others Wednesday evening, June 22, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred at 7:15 p.m. in the West Carroll Parish in far northeast Louisiana, on La. Highway 587 west of Oak Grove, reported KTBS.

Louisiana State Police reported that a 2001 Ford van veered off the left side of the road and hit a ditch culvert. The van then began to spin and came to a rest on its tires. The entire top of the van was torn off as a result of the single-vehicle crash.

Two children were killed in the crash, identified as Brittany Thornton, 12, and Emma Adams, 4.

Two other occupants, identified as Portia Thornton, 53, Kaitlyn Thornton, 19, were also killed in the automobile accident.

The van was reportedly transporting 11 people who belong to the New Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove.

Responding emergency crews rushed the van’s driver, 30-year-old Joey McKan of Oak Grove, and seven other occupants to Monroe and Jackson hospitals for treatment.

The injured were identified as Jake Thornton, 20, Aaron Coats, 21, two 16-year-olds and an unidentified passenger. The injuries acquired in the wreck ranged from minor to life-threatening.

A full investigation into the crash is underway. The cause of the automobile accident has yet to be uncovered.
