LeSueur County, MN — A hot air balloon crashed in LeSueur County Thursday night, June 16, 2011, and injured five people on board. The hot air balloon accident occurred just before 9 a.m., off LeSueur County Road 32 in the Lexington Township, reported KARE11.

According to police officials, when they arrived at the scene they saw the pilot of the hot air balloon trying to land due to gusty winds and the onset of darkness. The hot air balloon hit a ditch hard, causing the balloon basket to flip. The impact ejected the pilot from the basket into the ditch, as the balloon continued to drift into a nearby field with the four passengers still in the basket.

Responding emergency crews airlifted the pilot, Edward Joseph Chapman, 64, to North Memorial Medical Center with head and facial injuries. Another passenger was transported to the Queen of Peace Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The remaining passengers were treated at the scene by responding emergency crews.

The hot air balloon is reportedly owned by Balloon Ascensions Unlimited of Jordan, Minnesota.

Investigations into the hot air balloon accident are underway.
