New Castle, PA — The New Castle Police Department has launched an internal investigation after a police dog died in the back of a cruiser. The K-9 was found unresponsive in the New Castle Police car on Saturday, June 4, 2011, reported CBS Pittsburgh.
According to police, the police dog, Chico, has been with the New Castle Police Department since 2009 and was under the care of Officer James Hoyland.
When the K-9 was found unresponsive he was rushed to a veterinarian, where he was pronounced dead. Sources indicated that the dog might have been left in the car several hours before being found.
Some say that the heat could have killed the dog if it was left in a hot police cruiser.
To train just one police dog, it can cost $10,000. Private donations helped New Castle hire Chico for police duties.
New Castle police will hold a memorial service for Chico at 10 a.m. Thursday at the old Ben Franklin School.
