Washington D.C. — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety and Administration (CPSC) and eight manufacturers have voluntarily recalled about 1 million pool and spa drain covers for entrapment hazards the product poses. The CPSC announced the product recall on May 26, 2011.

The product recall was enacted after discovering that the recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which can possibly pose an entrapment hazard to consumers.

The eight manufacturers involved in this recall include: A&A, AquaStar, Color Match, Custom Molded Products, Hayward Pool Products, Pentair Water Pool & Spa, Rising Dragon, and Waterway.

For the model information, websites, and dates sold, please view the CPSC press release at: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11230.html.

Consumers are advised to contact the manufacturer of your pool or spa covers to receive a replacement or retrofit. If you have kiddie pools, wading pools and in-ground spas, retrofit or replacement of installed covers are not required in pools with multiple drain systems or gravity drainage systems or for covers installed before December 19, 2008.

For more information concerning the product recall, consumers can contact the Drain Cover Recall Hotline toll-free at (866) 478-3521 any time, or visit the Drain Cover Recall website at www.apsp.org/draincoverrecall.

Consumers who have Waterway Plastics drain covers should contact the firm toll-free at (866) 719-6044 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, or visit the manufacturer’s web site at www.waterwayplastics.com.
