Fairfield, CA — Thirteen people were rushed to the hospital after a tour bus crashed Monday evening, May 23, 2011 on Interstate 80. The bus accident occurred on westbound I-80, just east of the North Texas Street overcrossing at 4:27 p.m., reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the United Coach Tours bus was in the fast lane for unknown reasons, when it veered across the highway to the right and drove up an embankment. The bus barreled through a barbed wire fence, and drove onto Lyon Road, where it finally came to a stop on the frontage road just after missing an oncoming car.

Responding emergency crews rushed 13 bus passengers to near hospitals for treatment of injuries, ranging from minor to moderate.

Fairfield police, four Fairfield Fire Department units, eight CHP officers and five ambulance crews all responded to the scene of the bus accident.

The bus driver told investigators that she was having braking issues before the bus veered from the highway.

The bus was reportedly returning to San Francisco from the state Capitol when the accident occurred.

Investigations are underway.
