3-year-old Killed at South Carolina Church Daycare; Death Deemed an Accident

Gaffney, SC — A 3-year-old’s death at a Gaffney church daycare on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, was deemed an accident. The fatal accident occurred in the gymnasium of the West End Baptist Church at around 3:20 p.m., when a wooden stage section fell on top of the child, reported WSPA.
According to officials, 3-year-old Alyssa Jade Mayfield, of Gaffney bumped a wheeled cart that was storing several stage sections, as she was reportedly trying to retrieve a ball. A portable 4×8 foot wooden stage section fell onto Mayfield, leaving her with serious injuries.
Mayfield was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for treatment of blunt force head trauma, but she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Church members were reportedly seen giving Mayfield CPR before firefighters and emergency medical crews arrived at the scene. Firefighters continued CPR as she was transported to the hospital.
The Cherokee County Coroner is conducting an autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.
