Austin, TX — An accident at the Austin-Bergstorm International Airport Monday afternoon, April 4, 2011 left a Department of Public Safety (DPS) employee dead. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 1:45 p.m., during a training exercise at the TXDOT Flight Services hanger, reported KXAN.
DPS officials reported that Howard Lee Lombard, 53, was working on a DPS Communications trailer when the accident occurred.
Responding EMS crews stated that Lombard died of a traumatic injury, but they would not further elaborate on the type of injury he sustained.
DPS issued the following statement, “Lee played a vital role in many special assignments, including the operation of the Department’s mobile command center in missions along the border with Mexico,” said the Director of DPS, Steven C. McCraw. “According to many who worked with him, he had a can-do, positive attitude that motivated others.”
