West Palm Beach, FL — A collision on the 20-mile bend killed two Wellington teenagers and injured a third teen on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred on Southern Boulevard east of Glades, where the road intersects with County Road 880, which is commonly referred to as the 20-mile bend, at 9:40 p.m., reported the Palm Beach Post.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), “The events that caused the crash are still under investigation…but ultimately the Camry hit the rear corner of the trailer being pulled by the semi, and the car rolled severely damaging the front passenger area where the one girl was driving and the other was seated.

The Camry was reportedly headed east when it slammed into the trailer of the semi truck as it was crossing the roadway.

Responding emergency crews pronounced Mazelle M. Demeraski, 18, and Jahmila Mariaca, 18, both of Wellington, dead at the scene. Backseat passenger Eriberto Gomez Jr., 18, of Royal Palm Beach, was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment. His injuries proved not to be serious and he is expected to be released.

The driver of the semi, Burnice L. Thompson, 72, of North Carolina was not hurt in the wreck.

A full investigation is underway.
