Two Drowned, 7 Hospitalized in San Diego Bay Sailboat Accident

San Diego, CA– A sailboat accident in the San Diego Bay resulted in the deaths of two men and injured eight people on Sunday, March 27, 2011. The fatal accident occurred near Shelter Island just after 5 p.m., reported the Sign On San Diego.

According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and Coast Guard, the victims were aboard a 35-foot sailboat when it capsized in the bay. Those on board were thrown into the water, which included three children whose ages appeared to be from 10 to about 13-years-old.

Nearby boaters and Harbor Police vessels rushed over to help assist the victims.

Two men, who were described as Asian and appeared in their 50s, drowned in the water. Four others, including one child, were rushed to UCSD Medical Center for treatment. One woman is receiving treatment for hypothermia.

Emergency crews rushed three additional victims, including two children to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment. The children were discharged Sunday night.

It is unknown if the victims were wearing life jackets.

The identities of the victims are being withheld and the cause of the boat accident is unknown. Investigations are underway.
