Orlando, FL — A worker at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was airlifted to a hospital after being involved in an accident at the theme park Sunday afternoon, March 13, 2011. The worker sustained a head injury while working on the Primeval Whirl ride in the DinoLand U.S.A. section, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

According to officials, the worker, Russell Roscoe, 52, of Webster, Fla., was seriously injured while working on the Primeval Whirl, which is described by Disney as a mild rollercoaster. The ride was closed for maintenance at the time of the accident.

Reedy Creek Emergency Services rushed to scene, where they called for the Air Care Team at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The worker was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Roscoe succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Monday.

Walt Disney released the following statement:

“Our Walt Disney World community has experienced a tragic loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Russ Roscoe’s family and we are working to assist them during this difficult time; our thoughts and our prayers are with them. Our thoughts are also with Russ’ fellow cast members and the first responders who came to his aid. We deeply appreciate all their efforts. There is no higher priority than the safety of our cast and our guests, and we will work with authorities to thoroughly review every aspect of this incident.”
