New Castle, IN — A scissor lift accident at a Henry County steel manufacturing plant killed one contractor and seriously injured another on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The industrial accident occurred at around 10 a.m. at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. plant, located at 516 W. State Road 38, as reported by TheIndyChannel.com.

According to officials, the workers were conducting maintenance work on some machinery inside the plant on a scissor lift, about 40 feet in the air. For unknown reasons, the scissor lift suddenly collapsed.

One worker was reportedly pinned underneath the machinery as a result of the accident. That worker was removed from beneath the crane before being airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The second worker was killed in the accident. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

A full investigation into the fatal industrial accident is underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct an investigation into the accident as well.
