Gulfport, MS—A boy who missed his school bus and was running alongside of it, was hit and killed by the very same bus he was hoping to catch a ride to school in. The fatal accident occurred on Beverly Dive at 6:50 Tuesday morning, February 22, 2011, as reported by WLOX.

According to witness Andrea Camp who spoke to WLOX, 10-year-old Kendrell McDonald had just missed the school bus at its regular pick-up time in front of his house. The 5th grader then ran across an open field as the school bus made the loop, trying to get the driver’s attention.

“As the bus was departing from that pick up location, the witness said the child was running along side the bus,” Assistant Chief of Police Leonard Papania told WLOX. “We’re not really clear why, but the child made some sort of contact with the side of the bus, and at some point, lost his footing. We’re not clear on how this happened. As he fell, the two rear wheel tires unfortunately, went over the child.”

When Gulfport Police arrived at the scene they found McDonald lying in the street and bleeding.

Camp reported that she just doesn’t understand how the bus driver did not see McDonald.

Henry Arledge, the Harrison County Schools Superintendent, said the driver was not breaking any rules in doing this. The driver was new to the district.

A full investigation is underway.
