Chicago, IL—A collision involving a police squad car left one person dead and four others, including two officers from the Chicago Police Department, injured. The fatal accident occurred after a vehicle ran a red light at a South Side intersection Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Referring to preliminary accident reports, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said a car occupied by three people failed to stop at a red traffic light in the 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue around 2 a.m. The vehicle then collided with a squad car in the intersection, causing it to careen into a pole after the initial impact.
Fire Media Affairs Chief Quention Curtis said an EMS Plan 1, in which five ambulances are dispatched, was called after the crash occurred.
Shawn Garrett, 25, was rushed to Cook County-based John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, though his injuries proved fatal at 2:49 p.m.
Two other individuals who were in the red-light running vehicle were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and Northwestern Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Those victims, who remained unidentified, were also transported in serious-to-critical condition.
The two unidentified CPD officers who were occupying the squad car were taken to Christ Hospital in fair-to-serious condition. Their conditions were eventually upgraded to “good.”
While authorities have yet to ticket anyone in connection with the deadly South Side crash, investigations are expected to continue.
