Rio Rancho, NM– A Rio Rancho boy was hit by a school bus and then boarded it with leg and rib injuries on Wednesday afternoon, January 5, 2011. The automobile accident occurred at around 1:05 p.m. as the bus from Maggie Cordova Elementary School was traveling on Wexford Road near Tarpon Avenue, as reported by KRQE.

Rio Rancho Police Department reported that a 9-year-old boy ran in front of the school and was hit, but he still boarded the bus as it made a few more stops before emergency crews arrived.

Responding emergency crews rushed the boy via ambulance to University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment of rib and leg injuries.

A full investigation is underway. The Rio Rancho Public Schools is conducting its own investigation of the accident. The bus driver, who reportedly is a veteran, was placed on administrative leave and was required to take a drug-and-alcohol screening.

The identities of the bus driver and the victim are currently being withheld. No charges have been filed as of yet.
