Child Safety News: Choking Hazards Spur Recall of BabyLegs Socks, Leg Warmers

Seattle, WA—BabyUnited LLC dba BabyLegs, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled baby leg warmers and socks due to choking risks associated with them. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects approximately 4,500 units, on Dec. 23, 2010.

BabyLegs initiated the recall after it was discovered that a heart appliqué on the leg warmers and socks has the potential to detach, leaving small children vulnerable to choking hazards.

The Seattle-based company received word of one instance in which an infant began choking on the heart-shaped appliqué, though her mother was able to remove the appliqué soon enough to prevent the child from suffering potentially life-threatening consequences.

According to the CPSC news release, “This recall involves only those BabyLegs brand leg warmers, ankle-high socks and knee-high socks adorned with a heart-shape appliqué. The recalled products are pink, white or purple cable knit socks and leg warmers.”

The recalled baby leg warmers and socks were sold at independent retailers and online at www.babylegs.com between August 2010 and November 2010. They cost about $11 each.

Consumers have been urged to confiscate the potentially dangerous baby leg warmers and socks from small children and either remove the heart appliqué to eliminate the hazard altogether.

Consumers may also contact BabyLegs to obtain a full reimbursement or coupon, which can be redeemed on the BabyLegs website.

BabyLegs can be reached toll-free at (888) 791-6098 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, or online at www.babylegs.com for more information.
