Worker killed in construction accident at Pa. Holtwood Dam

Lancaster, PA—A construction accident at the Holtwood Dam in Lancaster County left one construction worker dead, after he was hit by a piece of heavy machinery. The fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning, December 16, 2010, as reported by WGAL.

The fatally injured construction worker was identified as Bruce Hardy, 59, of Bainbridge.

A state police statement reported, “Contractors… were attempting to move a piece of equipment that was stuck on a steep grade. Heavy equipment was moved to the location in an attempt to pull out the stuck loader. At approximately 0805 hours a portion of the second piece of equipment struck and killed (Hardy).”

The owner of the dam, PPL, said that Hardy was standing in an excavation area about 170 feet wide, when he was fatally hit.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the deadly construction accident.
