Cedar City, UT—A two-vehicle collision involving a garbage truck and a van, left a 9-month-old girl dead and critically injured three young boys and a female driver on Monday, December 6, 2010. The fatal automobile collision occurred around 12:30 p.m., at the intersection of 3000 North and State Route 130, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.

According to Cedar City police and witnesses, the van was attempting to make a left turn onto 3000 North, when she apparently changed her mind and continued to drive straight, although the light had already turned. The garbage truck reportedly tried to swerve, but the van clipped the truck, causing the truck to turn on its side and continue to push the van.

Four men reportedly ran to the wreckage and broke out a window, removing two children from the vehicle.

The garbage truck apparently struck the drivers side of the van, leaving a 9-month-old girl in the backseat dead. An 11-year-old boy and two 2-year-old boys, who were in car seats, were injured in the crash. They were rushed to Valley View Medical Center where they are in critical condition. The driver of the van was also hospitalized in critical condition.

The victim’s identities are currently being withheld. The last names of the children did not match the last name of the van’s driver, so it’s unclear if the driver and the children are related.

Two men in the garbage truck were also transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Investigations are underway.
