Putney, VT—University of Massachusetts students who were involved in a rollover bus accident believe that their bus driver suffered a possible heart attack, leading to the accident on Friday, December 3, 2010, as reported by Boston.com.

A tour bus transporting UMass Amherst students on a ski trip to Canada suddenly lost control on Interstate 91, in southern Vermont just before 4 p.m. The bus was reportedly traveling north in the right lane, when it suddenly veered across the four-lane highway, through the grassy median and southbound lanes, before it overturned in a roadside embankment along some trees. The crash reportedly occurred about 5 miles north of Exit 4 in a relatively flat stretch of land in Putney, a small town just north of Brattleboro.

Forty-five people were on board of the bus at the time of the accident. Seventeen people were injured. No other vehicles were involved.

Responding emergency crews had to extract the driver, who is believed to have suffered a heart attack leading to the crash, from the front windshield of the bus. At least one other person was also extracted from the windshield of the bus. A helicopter transported the driver to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he is in critical but stable condition.

Eight victims were treated and released at the scene by emergency crews. The other injured victims were transported to Springfield (Vt.) Hospital for treatment. All the students were released from the hospital by 9 p.m.

Seven other buses were traveling with the overturned bus when the accident occurred. The other buses pulled over following the accident and offered help until emergency crews arrived.

The seven other buses continued on their way to Quebec. The tour buses are reported owned by Tour World, a charter bus company in Danville, Pa.

Investigations are underway.
