New Orleans, LA — An oil rig explosion has left three workers with injuries, including two workers who sustained severe burns, when the rig exploded on the Bayou Perot on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, reported WTOV9.

At around 10:15 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard received a report on a rig explosion, roughly 20 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, leaving three people with injuries.

Officials have not released the immediate status of the condition of the rig or the identities of the injured workers.

Investigations are underway. It was reported that workers were not actively drilling at the time of the explosion.

The accident came just after the Obama administration announced plans to keep a long-standing oil drilling ban in the Gulf of Mexico.
