Utica NY Accident: Man Killed in Christmas on Main Street Firework Accident

Utica, NY—A fatal firework accident left a 56-year-old man dead at the annual Christmas on Main Street Saturday night, November 20, 2010. Officials reported that the work related accident occurred around 5:45 p.m., at the detonation area, just north of the 100 block of Washington Street and west of the bridge that connects Genesee Street in downtown Utica to North Genesee street, as reported by the Utica Observer-Dispatch.

According to officials, John Hatter of Canastota, was injured while detonating the fireworks for the Christmas festival. Hatter was transported by Utica Police to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

It is unknown what exactly happened or the type of injuries Hatter sustained.

Utica Police, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating the accident.
