Food Safety Recall: Potential Health Risks Spur Recall of Baugher’s Apple Cider

Westminster, MD—Baugher Enterprise, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voluntarily recalled Baugher’s Apple Cider upon discovering that the product may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7). The food safety recall, which was announced Friday, November 5, 2010, affects all production of Baugher’s Apple Cider.
According to the Baugher Enterprise’s press release, “E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.”
The recalled Baugher’s Apple Cider was made available for purchase in retail stores throughout Maryland and the Gettysburg region of Pennsylvania. The product was sold in gallon and one-half gallon plastic jugs.
While there have been seven cases of E. coli O157 infections with potential associations to the recalled apple cider, the contamination has not yet been confirmed. Three of the seven individuals sickened by the E. coli 0157 contamination were hospitalized as a result. No deaths were reported.
The Maryland-based firm has advised consumers to throw the apple cider away and contact the place of purchase, providing a receipt, to obtain a full reimbursement. Consumers with questions or concerns are urged to contact Baugher Enterprise, Inc. at (410) 848-5541 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), along with local health departments, are expected to conduct a full investigation into the E. coli cases. A source has not yet been determined.
