Sorrento, LA—A freak accident Friday morning, Oct. 29 claimed the life of a college student. According to a WAFB report, a 200-pound object plummeted from the top of a power pole, striking the 19-year-old student in the head and killing him instantly.

“They were doing a poll climbing class, doing pile climbing drills,” said Officer Owen Ockman of the Sorrento Police Department, adding, “And that’s when one of the parts gave way.”

Joshua Wallace was apparently working on the pole when the 200-pound object fell on his head around 8:30 a.m. Wallace was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Chancellor Joe Ben Welch contended, “The entire college community is saddened by this tragic loss… Our thoughts and prayers are with the students family at this time.”

“At this time, we want to ensure our students, faculty, and staff receive the support and counseling they need to be able to cope. We will provide counseling services for as long as it is needed,” Welch noted.

Students were dismissed from their classes at 9 a.m. on that unfortunate day. The electric line technician program was suspended pending a full probe into the fatal incident, Welch added.

Investigations are underway.
