Clermont, FL—Authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating a tragic accident that occurred outside of a Lake County home Monday night, October 25, 2010. A 2-year-old girl was hit and killed by a pickup truck, which was being driven by her mother’s boyfriend at the time, according to information provided by Click Orlando.

FHP reports indicated 26-year-old Jose Baizabal was lending his girlfriend, mother of 2-year-old Natalie Santiago, a helping hand as she moved before 7:20 p.m. Monday. When he got into his pickup truck and was about to leave, however, he failed to notice young Natalie in front of his vehicle.

Baizabal’s pickup subsequently ran over the little girl, causing her to sustain traumatic injuries. While emergency medical services (EMS) personnel seemingly responded to the scene to rush Natalie to South Lake Hospital, she eventually succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The fatal motor vehicle accident occurred outside a home on Buckhill Road in Clermont. Charges are allegedly pending.

According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), unintentional injuries are the fifth leading cause of death overall. Motor vehicle accidents make up 41.8 percent of those fatal unintentional injuries.
