New York, NY—Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday, October 21, 2010, that fewer teen drivers are becoming involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes. A review of data and past statistics, which was published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, found that from 1996 to 2008, the number of 16- and 17-year-old motorists in fatal accidents dropped by nearly 50 percent. In connection with the driver safety report, the CDC has also initiated the “Parents Are the Key” campaign, which advises parents to be more engaged in their kids’ driving, as reported by Reuters.

In 2004, there were 2,230 16- and 17-year-old drivers involved in fatal automobile accidents. In 2008, on the other hand, that number declined by more than a third, to 1,437 traffic casualties within that age group. According to Ruth A. Shults of the CDC in Atlanta, “The first few years of driving are a special period… We have made impressive progress and we still have more work to do.” The CDC report also stated that while the rate of minors (under 18) involved in car crashes was 36 out of 100,000 in 2006, that rate fell to 16.7 in 2008. Additionally, New York and New Jersey were deemed the safest places for teenage drivers, with a fatal crash rate of 10 per 100,000. Researchers concluded Wyoming, which had a rate of 59.9 per 100,000 on the other hand, was the most dangerous for new and inexperienced drivers.

Shults urged parents to accompany their children while driving under a range of different conditions, such as rain and snow. She also encouraged them to join their kids as they practice driving under nocturnal circumstances. “One of the primary reasons that this age group has a higher accident rate is driving inexperience… We find that teenage drivers, for each mile driven, crash about four times the rate of older drivers,” explained Shults. While a reason behind the falling crash rates was unknown, authors of the report alleged contributing factors might also include economic troubles and escalating gasoline prices, hence less driving.
