Ionia, MI—Living Foods, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voluntarily recalled bulk and retail-size packages of Alfalfa Sprouts due to the potential for Salmonella contamination. According to the FDA’s September 7, 2010 news release, Salmonella is particularly dangerous in young kids, elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Living Foods, Inc. issued the food safety recall after a single package of Living Foods, Inc. Alfalfa Sprouts tested positive for Salmonella spp.

While the company has not received any reports of illnesses in connection with the product, the recall was announced as a means of protecting consumers from the potential health risks.

According to the news release, “Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
