Pueblo, CO—Officials are investigating a fatal accident at the Vestas wind turbine tower plant, which left a 21-year-old man dead on Wednesday, October 27, 2010. The deadly workplace accident occurred at around 10:30 p.m., at the Vestas plant south of Pueblo, as reported by the Pueblo Chieftain.

The Pueblo Police Department reported John Keel, 21, was killed after he became pinned between a flatbed railroad car and a large forklift. Keel was rushed to St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center by responding emergency crews, where he died from “crushing injuries.”

Sgt. Eric Bravo of the Pueblo Police Department said, “It’s a huge forklift. It had like 5-foot-tall tires. (Keel) was working on the tracks, helping load sections of towers when he was pinned up against a flatbed train car by a forklift.”

“Vestas Towers America Inc., would like to express our deepest sympathies to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues at TTS. We are saddened by the news. Vestas and TTS are fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities regarding the investigation of this tragic accident,” stated, Knud Bjarne Hansen, the president of Vestas Towers.

Keel was employed by Transportation Technology Services.

A full investigation is underway.
