Phoenix, AZ—A 4-year-old girl was fatally shot on Saturday morning, October 23, 2010, while the girl’s family was shooting during target practice. Officials responded to the emergency call around 10:20 a.m., in the desert near Wickenburg, about 5 miles north of Morristown, as reported by ABC15.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials reported two families were in shooting target practice when the fatal shooting occurred. The victim’s older sister, age 8, was shooting at targets with a .22 rifle. She was being supervised by her father at the time. As the sister was shooting, the victim reportedly ran in front of the rifle, as it was being fired, causing her to be shot in the head.

Responding emergency crews flew the victim to St. Joseph’s hospital in Phoenix, where she was tragically pronounced dead at 11:33 a.m.

Officials are withholding the identity of the victim and the families involved.

The fatal shooting apparently doesn’t surprise the residents near the area. Morristown resident Steve Cox said, “People come to the area all the time to fire weapons, and it was only a matter of time before something went wrong…and I know sooner or later there would be a problem.”

Police officers are investigating the death as an accidental shooting.
