Corona, CA—A small plane crash claimed two lives Saturday, October 23, 2010. The wreckage, along with the victims’ bodies, was discovered near Lake Mathews the following day, as reported by the Associated Press.
According to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a small plane occupied by two people took off from Corona Municipal Airport Saturday. When the aircraft failed to return to return to the airport that evening, as scheduled, it was reported missing.
Riverside County Sheriff’s officials located the crashed plane Sunday morning, approximately 30 miles away from the Riverside County airport. Two people on board, whose identities were not released, suffered fatal injuries in the aviation accident.
The plane was described as a single-engine homebuilt Glasair aircraft. It was reportedly registered to a private owner in Moreno Valley.
Authorities from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are expected to conduct a full probe into the double-fatality plane crash.
According to information provided by the NTSB, there were 1,474 general aviation accidents reported in the United States during the year 2009. Of those plane crashes, 272 were fatal, resulting in a total of 474 casualties.
