Baltimore MD Accident News: Police Cruiser, Fire Truck Collide; 2 Injured

Baltimore, MD—A police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after his patrol car struck a Baltimore City fire truck Wednesday, October 20, 2010. The motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred as the fire engine was en route to west Baltimore to respond to a medical call, as reported by WBALTV.com.
According to police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, a police officer’s cruiser smashed into the Baltimore City fire truck before 10 a.m. The fire engine was headed towards Calhoun and Franklin streets at the time.
Both the officer and a member of the fire truck company were rushed to Shock Trauma to be treated for their injuries. Authorities have yet to release the victims’ identities.
While the extent of the officer’s injuries was unknown, the fire truck occupant allegedly sustained facial injuries.
Fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright noted, “What caused the collision, we don’t know at this point.”
Data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia revealed there were a total of 34,172 fatal traffic crashes during the year 2008.
A total of 37,423 victims were killed in those accidents on a national basis. In Maryland alone, 591 traffic fatalities were reported during that year.
Investigations into the Baltimore fire truck-cruiser collision are expected to be underway.
