NTSB issues preliminary report for fatal Beverley Municipal Airport Accident

Beverly, MA—Investigators found that the flight instructor that died in an August accident at the Beverly Municipal Airport was going to help another flight instructor and a student lock their canopy when he was hit by the propeller, as reported by the Boston Globe.
On August 27 at around 12:26 p.m. the victim was in a Piper PS-28-161, holding short of the runway, behind and to the right of a Piper Sport, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary report.
When the flight instructor and the student in the Piper Sport were “unable to get the canopy to lock correctly,” the victim decided to help them. As the victim opened the door of his plane, he jumped off the leading edge of the plane and came into contact with the moving propeller, leaving him dead.
The victim was identified as 30-year-old Weymouth resident, Michael Costales.
The final NTSB report will be issued within 12 months.
