Butler, KY—A collision involving a car and school bus sent a mother and her son to the hospital Thursday afternoon, October 14, 2010. The two-vehicle collision occurred along U.S. 27 around 3:15 p.m., according to information provided by WLWT.com.
Reports indicated a Pendleton County school bus was traveling in the southbound lanes of U.S. 27, just as a car pulled out of Ky. 17 and into the path of the school bus.
Upon doing so, the school bus smashed into the car’s passenger side. The bus was forced into a drainage ditch while the wrecked car eventually came to a rest on the shoulder of the road.
A mother and her 14-year-old son were occupying the car at the time. Responding emergency medical services (EMS) personnel airlifted the mother and her teenage son to University Hospital via medical helicopter. Their injuries were described as non-life threatening.
While five middle schoolers, along with the driver, were occupying the school bus at the time, no injuries were reported.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, there were 116 school buses involved in fatal crashes in the U.S. during the year 2008. Data indicated those accidents resulted in a total of 152 fatalities.
Investigations into the Kentucky school bus crash continue.
