Lawrenceville, GA—A pilot was tragically killed in a plane crash Saturday, October 9, 2010, shortly after departing from Briscoe Field airport in Gwinnett County. The fatal aviation accident occurred around 2:30 p.m., in close proximity to the intersection of Horsea Road and Industrial Park, as reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

According to Kathleen Bergen, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), an unspecified plane took off from Gwinnett’s Briscoe Field, made a left turn, and subsequently crashed.

Reports stated the pilot, identified as 50-year-old Timothy Blake, was the only person aboard the wrecked aircraft. Rescue crews at the scene had to extricate him before medical personnel could begin providing him with preliminary treatment.

He was subsequently rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville. However, his injuries proved fatal shortly after his arrival.

While FAA officials are expected to conduct a full probe into the deadly aircraft wreck, witnesses alleged they “heard the plane’s engine sputter before it slammed into a ditch and bounced onto a chain link fence.”

According to information provided by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), there were 1,474 general aviation accidents in 2009. A total of 474 victims lost their lives in those plane crashes.
