Providence, RI– A stolen van driven by a 14-year-old caused a collision, which killed a 9-year-old girl on Sunday, September 26, 2010. The teen is now being held pending a probable cause hearing, as reported by Boston.com and Turnto10.com.

The 14-year-old allegedly stole the van from the Nickerson House Community Center at around 3 p.m., just before he caused a collision with another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle alerted police, who began pursuing the van on Route 10. Although the officer’s lights were flashing, the teen wouldn’t pull over. The 14-year-old then sideswiped another vehicle, causing him to loose control and slam head-on into a Nissan Sentra.

A 9-year-old Cranston, R.I. girl, her mother and two other children, who were riding in the Sentra, were taken to area hospitals for treatment. They were seriously injured. Sadly, the 9-year-old girl passed away from her injuries.

The 14-year-old, who’s identity hasn’t been released because he is a juvenile, was treated for minor injuries before being taken to the Rhode Island Training School. The teen appeared before a judge on Monday morning for one count of reckless driving, death resulting, three counts of reckless driving, serious bodily injury resulting, and one count of being in possession of a stole vehicle.

A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for Friday. The teen is being monitored and is considered to be a danger to himself and others.
