Orlando, FL—A car slammed into two horses carrying mounted patrol volunteers Friday morning, October 1, 2010. The accident, which landed one person in a hospital and left the horses with unspecified wounds, occurred at Norton Avenue and Church Street in Orlando, according to information provided by ClickOrlando.com.

Police stated two civilian volunteer riders were en route to the opening of the Amway Center in downtown Orlando when a car, driven by an Orlando city commissioner’s father, struck the horses they were on before 8 a.m.

The horses were traveling in the eastbound right lane of Church Street when Charlie Ings’ Lincoln Town Car rear-ended them. According to police, Ings’ put his visor down to avoid the sun’s glare prior to the collision. He allegedly told police he did not notice the horses before hitting them.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene and rushed one of the volunteer riders to an area hospital. His injuries were described as non-life threatening. The other volunteer reportedly refused treatment.

While the extent of the horses’ injuries was not specified, they were taken to the Orlando police stable to be treated for their wounds.

Charges are pending the outcome of accident investigations.
