Fire Hazard: Brumlow Mills Recalls Potentially Dangerous Zen Room Rugs

Calhoun, GA—Brumlow Mills, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled approximately 1,000 Zen Large and Small Room Rugs due to fire hazards associated with them. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Thursday, September 23, 2010.
According to the CPSC news release, “The large rugs fail to meet federal flammability standards and could ignite, posing the risk of fire and burn hazards to consumers. The small rugs fail to meet federal labeling requirements. Small rugs are not required to meet the federal flammability standard; however, they are required to be permanently labeled with the following statement: “FLAMMABLE (FAILS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE STANDARD FF 2-70): SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR SOURCES OF IGNITION.”
While no injuries have been reported in connection with the potentially risky rugs, a recall was ostensibly issued as a safety precaution.
The recalled rugs were sold via J.C. Penny’s Web site and catalog. They were made available for purchase from January 2010 to March 2010 with prices ranging from $40 to $400.
The following rugs are affected by the defective product recall:

• Color: Rust Sage

• Color: Rust Sage
Size: 22″x60″
Large Rugs
• Color: Rust Sage

• Color: Rust Sage
Size: 6′ Sq
• Color: Rust Sage
Size: 22″x108″
• Color: Rust Sage
Size: 8′x10′
Consumers who purchased the large rugs have been urged to cease use of them and contact Brumlow Mills to receive a replacement product or reimbursement. Those who purchased small rugs are advised to contact the company to receive a new label that includes warning information.
