Los Angeles, CA—A wrestler participating in a tournament at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut suddenly collapsed and was later pronounced dead on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The 20-year-old wrestler from Rio Hondo College fell to the ground around 11:30 p.m., while he was on the mat with an opponent, as reported by KTLA.

Jesus “Jesse” Cruz was on the mat with another wrestler when he suddenly collapsed for unknown reasons. Cruz was reportedly unresponsive and was given CPR at the scene, before he was rushed by responding emergency crews to San Dimas Community Hospital.

Sadly, Cruz was pronounced dead by medical professionals just after 12:20 p.m. Officials are unsure what exactly caused the athlete to collapse.

The all-day tournament was canceled following the tragic incident.

Cruz reportedly was the captain for the wrestling team, and was known as an “ideal student-athlete” who maintained a high GPA.

A full investigation is underway.
