Des Moines, IA—A fatal accident at the United Parcel Service loading dock at the Des Moines airport on Thursday, September 16, 2010, left one person dead. The fatal accident occurred around 5:56 a.m., as reported by the Des Moines Register.

Des Moines Police reported that Daniel Raber, 64, a United Parcel Service employee, was opening a gate to allow a semi-truck delivery, when he got pinned while the truck was making a sharp turn.

Sgt. Jeff Edwards, a Des Moines police spokesperson told KCCI, “They were coming through the guard shack behind me there through the gate. Another UPS employee opened up the gate. As they opened up the gate the truck swung wide to make the turn coming in there and it looks like our victim was caught between the truck and the guard shack. It looks like the truck kind of pinched in between the two spots.”

Raber was rushed to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by medical professionals.

The driver of the semi was identified as Si Mohammed Abondou, 29, of Orlando, Fla. The driver is reportedly a student driver and was being supervised by an instructor, who was also inside the truck when the accident occurred.

A full investigation is underway.
