Portland, ME—A plane crashed in close proximity to the Portland International Jetport (PWM) Saturday, July 17, 2010, claiming the lives of two people on board. The fatal aviation accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. and seemed to have sparked a small fire on impact, according to information provided by FOX 23.

Mark Haskell, 42, was reportedly piloting a YAK-52 aerobic training aircraft when it crashed not too far from the Portland International Jetport runway.

While the cause of the plane wreck remains under investigation, witnesses alleged they saw the plane swerve to one side before coming down on Western Avenue.

Reports indicated a bystander videotaped the aftermath of the unfortunate plane crash, while calling 911 to notify authorities of its occurrence. The home video allegedly shows witnesses, including one who called out for a fire extinguisher, rushing towards the scene to offer what help they could.

Though there were no injuries reported on the ground, the pilot and his 66-year-old passenger were not so fortunate. Both Haskell and Thomas Casangrande succumbed to their traumatic injuries at the scene, located only a few streets away from South Portland’s Maine Mall.

Reports stated Haskell was a renowned pilot at the Portland Jet Port, as well as an air traffic controller for more than 20 years of his life.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to conduct a full probe into the deadly aircraft wreck.
