Clearwater, FL (Tampa motorcycle accident attorney news)—A motorcyclist was tragically killed in a collision with a sport utility vehicle on Saturday, July 10, 2010 in Clearwater. Police were alerted about the fatal accident at around 10:30 p.m., on Missouri Avenue, reports the St. Petersburg Times and Tampa Bay area accident attorney, David Shapiro.
Clearwater police officials say a 26-year-old Pinellas Park man was riding a Megelli bike southbound on Missouri Avenue, when he slammed into a Dodge SUV, as it tried to make a left turn from northbound Mission Ave onto Belleair Road.
The biker was identified as Bobby Joseph Paonessa, who resides at 70th Avenue North. Responding emergency medical crews sadly pronounced Paonessa dead at the scene of the wreck.
The driver of the SUV was identified as, Lacy Smithson, 27, of Clearwater. Officials did not say if she was injured in the crash.
Authorities said Paonessa was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck, but sadly it was not enough to save his life. Police are investigating who was at fault for the fatal two-vehicle collision.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that in 2009, there were 8,313 motorcycle crashes across the state of Florida, with 376 of those crashes resulting in a fatality.
