Iowa City, IA—Iowa State Patrol troopers are investigating a single-vehicle accident that went unreported until a landowner found the grisly scene on Sunday morning, July 25, 2010. Four people were found in an overturned vehicle in a ditch along Herbert Hoover Highway, reported the Press-Citizen.

According to State Troopers, a black 2009 Nissan Altima was traveling west on Herbert Hoover Highway when it failed to negotiate a curve in the road, causing the car to drive off the highway and rollover in a northern ditch.

A nearby landowner discovered the vehicle, overturned on its roof, about 75 feet from the highway, which was obscured by tall prairie grass, with four deceased victims.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the victims as Heather L. Althiser, 27, of Onalaska, Wis.; Rebecca J. Frea, 27, of Iowa City; Jason R. Onsgard, 27, of Iowa City; and Joseph W. Vinopal Jr., 26, of LaCrosse, Wis. It is unknown who was the driver.

Frea, Onsgard and Vinopal, who were not wearing seatbelts, were reportedly ejected from the vehicle during the wreck.

Responding emergency crews transported the deceased to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s morgue.

Police are currently investigating the fatal crash.
