Chicago, IL—A street race took a deadly turn Sunday, July 11, 2010, when one of the vehicles involved crashed along the Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway on Chicago’s West Side. The DUI-related accident resulted in one fatality and left two others injured, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Reports indicated the driver 2004 Chevrolet Impala, along with that of another car, challenged each other to a street race before early Sunday. However, the race came to a tragic end in close proximity to the South Oakley Boulevard exit ramp on the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290).

Around 2:30 a.m., the 28-year-old driver of the Impala, Edward Dixon, lost control for unknown reasons. Upon doing so, the Impala reportedly overturned, partially ejecting Dixon and 28-year-old front-seat passenger Maurice A. Horton.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel seemingly responded to the scene after the violent wreck. According to Illinois State Police (ISP), Dixon was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

An unidentified back-seat passenger was also reportedly hospitalized, though his/her injuries were not considered life threatening.

Horton, on the other hand, was not so fortunate and suffered fatal injuries in the single-vehicle wreck.

While Dixon has since been charged with driving while under the influence, ISP officials alleged they have no information concerning the other vehicle involved in the race.

Investigations continue.
