Chapel Hill, NC—One person died and two others were injured after a plane went down as it attempted to land at Horace Williams Airport. The tragic aviation accident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2010, according to reports by MyNC.com, as well as the News Observer.

Kathleen Bergen of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a single-engine Cirrus SR-20 was coming in for a landing at Horace Williams Airport when something went wrong.

The aircraft apparently touched down, traveling more than 800 feet and jumping about three times before veering off the runway. Upon doing so, the plane’s left wing smashed into a tree, seemingly triggering the release of the aircraft’s parachute.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews arrived at the scene to rush co-pilot Kyle Henn, as well as passenger James Donahue, to area hospitals for treatment. The pilot of the small plane, Thomas Pitts, did not survive the wreck.

According to Henn’s family, he was listed in fair condition at UNC Hospitals after the wreck but has since been released. Donahue’s legs were allegedly severed in the plane wreck. He was listed in critical condition and remained hospitalized as of Wednesday.

Kyle Henn is reportedly the brother of Nate Henn, one of the 74 victims killed in the violent bombings in Uganda on Sunday.

FAA officials, along with authorities from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are expected to investigate the fatal aviation accident.
