Oklahoma City, OK—Two construction workers were hit and killed by a passing vehicle, while the workers were in a construction zone on Interstate 40. The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, just west of Yukon along westbound I-40, as reported by New9.com.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) stated a Chevy HHR left the roadway and hit the two workers for unknown reasons. Troopers are still trying to determine what caused Ethel Cooper, 61, to strike the workers.

OHP Trooper Tom Barton said, “She hit the right spot where she drove off the roadway, and her wheel hit the spot where she couldn’t come back on the roadway. She wasn’t paying attention for some reason.”

Both Salvador Hernandez, 48, and his nephew Jose Hernandez, 20, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Cooper was rushed to Canadian Valley Hospital in Yukon in good condition. A male passenger in Cooper’s vehicle was not seriously injured.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) was at the scene to help with ongoing investigations. It is unknown if Cooper was cited for the fatal wreck.
