Rochester, MN—An ABBCO worker was killed when he was pinned underneath a soil compactor on Monday, June 28, 2010. Emergency rescue crews were called to the scene at 4:30 p.m., at East Circle Drive Northeast in Rochester, near Mayo Clinic’s northeast clinic, as reported by the Post-Bulletin.

Police officials identified the deceased worker as Philip Soukup, 35, of Rochester.

Other workers told officials that Soukup was operating a soil compactor when one of the compactor’s wheels slid down an embankment, causing the heavy machinery to roll. Soukup was thrown under compactor as it rolled, trapping him underneath.

Before emergency crews arrived at the scene, other workers used a tractor with a backhoe to lift the machinery off the worker.

Several emergency vehicles and a Mayo Clinic helicopter responded to the accident.

Police Lt. Casey Moilanen said authorities are continuing to investigate, but it appears to be an accident.

Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) officials arrived at the scene to conduct a full investigation into the fatal construction accident. The Rochester Police Department is also investigating.
