Columbus, OH—American Signature Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled about 24,000 entertainment centers. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, with regard to a fall hazard the furniture may pose to consumers.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the shelves have the potential to disconnect from the entertainment center itself if it is moved around. This defect could cause the shelves to fall onto consumers and injure them.

The company has apparently received four reports of the shelf above the television coming down. Two of these instances resulted in minor injuries to consumers, including a child who hurt her finger and an adult who suffered an injury to his mouth. The injured adult required stitches after the incident. Property damage was also reported in connection with two cases of falling shelves.

According to the CPSC, “The recalled entertainment centers with model names “Arts and Crafts”, “Vineyard Manor”, “Lake Cottage”, “Studio One”, “West Indies” and “Plantation Cove” were sold in various colors including dark brown, natural, black and white with fixed or adjustable shelves.”

The recalled entertainment centers were manufactured in China, Malaysia and Thailand. They were made available for purchase at Value City Furniture, Rooms Today and American Signature Furniture stores between October 2002 and December 2009. The product’s value was listed at approximately $1,650.

Consumers have been urged to leave the entertainment centers where they are until they receive a complimentary repair kit. If moving the entertainment center is necessary, the center shelf above the T.V. should be removed prior to transport. Consumers who do not receive repair kits are advised to contact the place of purchase.

For additional information concerning the defective product recall, consumers may contact American Signature toll-free at (877) 793-3423 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Consumers may also visit the company’s Web sites at www.VCF.com or www.ASFurniture.com.
