San Diego, CA—Two San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers were injured when a high-speed chase through City Heights resulted in a wreck. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was critically injured in the Thursday morning police chase that began in the 3700 block of Van Dyke Avenue, as reported by KSWB.

About 4:30 a.m., the officers tried to stop a dark-colored GMC pickup truck that they believed was tied to a hit-and-run accident. The pickup refused to stop for the officers, and instead sped through the city streets at speeds up to 80 mph at times.

At the intersection of Altadena and Orange avenues the fleeing truck driver ran a stop sign at about 50 mph and smashed into the right front side of the patrol car. The impact ripped off the car’s right front tire and tore off the hood.

The pickup truck then began to spin uncontrollably before slamming into several parked cars in front of the Park Gardens apartments. A reported 13 parked cars were involved.

The truck driver was ejected from his truck and was found unconscious on the ground. He reportedly sustained serious injuries in the wreck. The driver was rushed to a nearby hospital treatment.

The SDPD officers were conscious when they were transported to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

A full investigation into the wreck and high-speed chase is underway.
